Mid-Life Criterion Shift

Dr Richard Bolstad

Do you ever wonder if the path you’ve been walking on has become a dead end? Do you find yourself looking backwards with regret instead of forwards with energy? Have you reached a new phase in life where what you did before no longer fits? If this resonates with you or if your clients face this … maybe you are ready for a Mid-Life Criterion Shift. Stop pushing yourself to achieve things that no longer inspire you. Instead, find …

  • A secret new key to discover hidden dreams that you abandoned, and recreate them in real life.
  • A “second chance” to create the path you walked away from, and more fully match your deepest values.
  • A way to take the steering wheel and create change instead of being swept away by the multiple crises of our time.
  • The skills to guide your clients to do the same, moving beyond “therapy” to discovery.
  • Skills that build on NLP, Time Line Therapy® techniques and Inner Family Systems (IFS) parts processes.
  • A new model of personal change emerging from research on Nostalgia as a hidden door to empowerment.
  • Increasing research also demonstrates that this methodology can be expected to deliver health benefits that researchers at North Dakota University call “A Fountain of Youth”.

Developed by Dr Richard Bolstad, NLP Trainer, New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists. “My sixties and seventies have been perhaps the most productive and innovative years of my life as I’ve tapped into this extraordinary new source of energy. Join me in redefining the journey we are on, whatever age you think you are now.” From Nostalgia to bliss. In Japanese culture, Nostalgia is understood as a positive enjoyment of the past (called natsukashii 懐かしい). In the west, people often fear nostalgia as a depressive symptom, but research by Dr Andrew Abeyta (Rutgers University) and others shows the positive power of nostalgia, processed skilfully, to promote meaningfulness psychologically, and enhance youthfulness in health outcomes. Research by Dr Wing-Yee Cheung (University of Southampton) and others also show the positive power of anticipated nostalgia (imagining how this moment will feel in future). Transforming nostalgia into a powerful psychological choice is made possible by understandings such as Inner Family Systems theory and NLP’s Time Line Therapy® techniques. Research shows that nostalgia is a powerful clue to times when a person has felt more in charge of their own life, and to values that they have not had time to invest energy in recently. This explains why people can even feel nostalgia for times they did not live through (called anemoia), as researched by Márk Miskolczi and others.
